Cooking
Feel free to get creative in the kitchen and cook them any way you like, but here are our top tips for making the most out of mushrooms!
Storage
Keep mushrooms in a cool, dark environment to get the longest shelf life. Try not to leave them in direct sunlight or they’ll quickly start to discolour.
Fun Fact: Mushrooms keep growing even after they’re picked (yes, really!) so if they change appearance after a while, it’s nothing to worry about.
Washing
Mushrooms are made of around 90% water, so don’t soak them in water or scrub too hard. All they need is a quick rub to knock off any dirt and they’re ready to cook.
Cooking tips
There are many ways to cook mushrooms, here are our experts favourites:
- Slice and add to a pan with hot oil for crispy mushrooms with a dark colour. Don’t move them around the pan too much to get a nice charred appearance.
- Make sure mushrooms have plenty of room in the pan, otherwise you’ll steam them rather than fry.
- Try quartering your mushrooms and cook them slowly in melted butter. Add garlic to the pan while cooking and sprinkle some fresh parsley on top.
- Larger mushrooms with an open cup can be fried, roasted or grilled. For a tasty beef burger alternative, rub with oil and seasoning and pop under the grill.
- Shiitake mushrooms are delicious sauteed in oil for 4-5 minutes to release their distinct umami flavour. They also are fried or roasted, depending on the dish you want to cook, and lend themselves perfectly to Asian cuisine.
